Storing grain to capture a post-harvest price rally is one of the most common marketing decisions a grain farmer makes — but it is rarely free. The cost of carry includes drying fuel, bin ownership, aeration electricity, pest management, storage shrink from moisture loss and insect damage, and the opportunity cost of tying up capital. Many producers compare the harvest cash price to a March futures price and conclude storage is profitable, only to discover that drying and shrink ate most of the margin.

Drying Costs: The Biggest Variable

A 10,000-bushel galvanized grain bin with aeration floor, fan, and unloading equipment costs approximately $35,000–$50,000 installed. Amortized over 25 years at 6% interest, the annual capital cost is roughly $2,700–$3,900, or $0.27–$0.39/bu/year if the bin is full. If you only fill it to 60% capacity, the per-bushel cost rises proportionally.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Forgetting moisture shrink. This is the single largest storage cost and is often overlooked. Drying 22% corn to 15% loses 8.2% of bushels — more than all other costs combined.

2. Underestimating drying fuel. Propane prices are volatile. Lock in fuel contracts before harvest, or budget at the upper end of the range.

3. Poor aeration management. Running fans continuously in humid weather can re-wet grain and promote mold. Use automatic aeration controllers that only run when outside air is cooler and drier than grain.

4. Ignoring opportunity cost. The money tied up in stored grain could be paying down operating loans or earning interest. Include interest at your actual borrowing rate.

5. Not monitoring grain temperature. Check grain temperature every 2–4 weeks. Spoiled grain from undetected hot spots can destroy an entire bin's value.
