Once resistant, the herbicide no longer works on that weed population. Prevention: rotate herbicide modes of action (use different SOA numbers each season), mix herbicides with different SOA, use full label rates (do not cut rates), integrate non-chemical control (cultivation, cover crops, mulch), clean equipment between fields, and scout regularly.
