Dry Matter (lb) = As-Fed × (1 − Moisture% ÷ 100)
DM% = 100 − Moisture%
As-Fed from DM = DM Weight ÷ (DM% ÷ 100)
100 lb silage at 50% moisture: DM = 100×0.50 = 50 lb. DM% = 50%. Water = 50 lb. For 100 lb DM: 100÷0.50 = 200 lb as-fed.

Dry matter is feed after water removal. Nutrient concentrations and animal requirements are on a DM basis. Moisture varies: hay 10-15%, silage 50-70%, fresh forage 70-85%.
