Convert feed weight from as-fed (wet) to dry matter using moisture content. Essential for balancing livestock rations.
Enter as-fed weight and moisture% to get dry matter weight, DM%, water weight, and as-fed equivalent of 100 lb DM.
Dry Matter (lb) = As-Fed ร (1 โ Moisture% รท 100)
DM% = 100 โ Moisture%
As-Fed from DM = DM Weight รท (DM% รท 100)
100 lb silage at 50% moisture: DM = 100ร0.50 = 50 lb. DM% = 50%. Water = 50 lb. For 100 lb DM: 100รท0.50 = 200 lb as-fed.
1. Weigh feed as-fed. 2. Determine moisture (forage tester, microwave, or lab). 3. Enter both. Use DM for ration formulation, as-fed for actual feeding.
Dry matter is feed after water removal. Nutrient concentrations and animal requirements are on a DM basis. Moisture varies: hay 10-15%, silage 50-70%, fresh forage 70-85%.
Comparing prices on as-fed basis. Forgetting DM changes with storage. Using average moisture instead of tested values.
