Maize targeting 8 t/ha needs 20 kg N/t โ 160 kg N/ha gross. Previous soybean supplies 30 kg N/ha credit. Soil at 3% OM mineralizes ~36 kg N/ha. Net N to apply = 160 โ 30 โ 36 = 94 kg N/ha, requiring ~204 kg urea/ha (94 รท 0.46).
Common mistakes: ignoring legume cover crops in the rotation (soybean, alfalfa supply 30โ100 kg N/ha free), applying all N at planting instead of splitting, overestimating mineralization on sandy cold soils, and using yield goals that are too optimistic. Always soil test nitrate in spring for pre-sidedress nitrate test (PSNT).
Corn needs about 20โ25 kg N per tonne of grain yield. For a 10 t/ha target, gross N is 200โ250 kg N/ha; after previous crop and organic matter credits, typical net N application is 150โ200 kg N/ha, or 325โ435 kg urea/ha.
Yes. Grain soybean typically supplies 20โ40 kg N/ha credit to the following crop; alfalfa and red clover can supply 80โ150 kg N/ha. Always adjust the previous crop credit downward if the legume was poorly nodulated or was grazed/removed.
Temperate mineral soils mineralize roughly 10โ15 kg N/ha per 1% organic matter in the top 15 cm. This calculator uses 12 kg N/ha per 1% OM as a standard extension estimate. Sandy and cold soils mineralize less; warm, moist soils mineralize more.
No. Split nitrogen applications reduce loss and improve efficiency. Apply 20โ30% at planting as starter band, then top-dress the remainder at rapid growth (V4โV6 for corn, tillering for wheat). Side-dressing also allows adjusting N rate based on in-season yield expectations.
Multiply kg N/ha by 0.892 to get lb N/acre. Conversely, multiply lb N/acre by 1.12 to get kg N/ha. Urea at 46% N: 1 kg N/ha รท 0.46 = 2.17 kg urea/ha; 1 lb N/acre รท 0.46 = 2.17 lb urea/acre.
