You heard regenerative agriculture pays $20 per ton of carbon. Your 100 ha corn-soybean field at 2% SOC in 30 cm holds about 78 t C/ha, or 286 t CO₂e/ha. Increasing SOC by 0.1% over 10 years would sequester ~4 t CO₂e/ha — that is a real but modest carbon credit.

This calculator uses the standard IPCC soil carbon stock equation: SOC (t/ha) = SOC% × bulk density (g/cm³) × depth (cm) × 0.1. CO₂ equivalent uses the molecular weight ratio CO₂/C = 44/12 ≈ 3.667.
SOC stock = SOC% × BD × depth × 0.1. CO₂e = SOC × 3.667. Per-acre value (short tons C/acre) = t C/ha × 0.446. Total on field = SOC stock × field area.
SOC = 2.0%, BD = 1.3 g/cm³, depth = 30 cm. SOC = 2.0 × 1.3 × 30 × 0.1 = 7.8 t C/ha. CO₂e = 7.8 × 3.667 = 28.6 t CO₂e/ha. On 100 ha, total C = 780 t, CO₂e = 2,860 t.
Common mistakes: confusing OM% with SOC% (multiply OM by 0.58), not adjusting bulk density for depth, sampling only the top 15 cm when reporting to 1 m, and treating surface SOC gains as permanent. SOC changes slowly; re-sample every 3–5 years using the same depth and method.
Soil organic carbon is the carbon fraction of organic matter in soil (plant residues, microbes, humus). It is about 58% of total soil organic matter. SOC is the largest terrestrial carbon pool and the basis of carbon farming programs.
Multiply organic matter percentage by 0.58 (Van Bemmelen factor). If your soil test reports 3% OM, SOC is about 1.74%. Conversely, SOC% × 1.724 ≈ OM%.
Carbon dioxide has molecular weight 44 (C=12, O₂=32). One ton of carbon equals 44/12 = 3.667 tons of CO₂. This is the standard factor used in carbon accounting and greenhouse gas inventories.
Most cropland can sequester 0.2–1.0 t CO₂e/ha/yr with cover crops, reduced tillage and diversified rotations. Soils already high in SOC sequester less. Over 20 years, a well-managed farm may add 5–20 t CO₂e/ha.
IPCC and carbon standard protocols use 0–30 cm for Tier 1 reporting, but many programs require 0–10, 10–30 and 30–100 cm layers. Always sample to the same depth as your baseline and report bulk density alongside SOC.
