Formula & How It Works

Total Gain (lb) = Final Weight − Initial Weight

ADG (lb/day) = Total Gain ÷ Days

Feed:Gain Ratio = Total Feed Intake ÷ Total Gain

Calculation Example

Cattle from 500 to 800 lb in 120 days, eating 3,000 lb feed: Gain = 300 lb. ADG = 300÷120 = 2.5 lb/day. F:G = 3000÷300 = 10:1. Feed cost at $0.10/lb = $300.
