This empirical formula (used by many US extension services) estimates the tons of standard agricultural lime needed per acre based on the buffer pH, which measures the soil's reserve acidity.

ENM (Effective Neutralizing Material) accounts for lime purity and fineness. Lower ENM means more lime is needed.

A soil test shows buffer pH of 6.0, current pH 5.5, target 6.5. Base rate = (7.0 โ 6.0) ร 4.0 = 4.0 tons/acre. With ENM of 90%: Adjusted = 4.0 ร (100/90) = 4.44 tons/acre. For 10 acres: 44.4 tons. At $35/ton: $1,554.

Input field area and lime quality (ENM% from the supplier). 5. Add the delivered price per ton for a cost estimate.
Agricultural lime neutralizes soil acidity, raises pH, improves nutrient availability, and enhances microbial activity. The buffer pH test is more accurate than simply using water pH because it measures both active and reserve (exchangeable) acidity, which determines how much lime is actually needed.
Common mistakes: Using water pH instead of buffer pH to calculate lime needs โ water pH only measures active acidity and will underestimate requirements. Applying lime without incorporating it โ lime moves very slowly in soil, so tilling it in speeds up pH change. Ignoring lime quality โ a 60% ENM lime needs 50% more product than 90% ENM to achieve the same result.
