Bananas are the 4th most important staple crop globally and the most traded fruit. They are heavy nutrient feeders, especially potassium (KโO demand is 2-4x N). Commercial Cavendish plantations in Philippines, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Colombia apply 2,000-3,500 kg/ha/year of compound fertilizer. Smallholder plantain in West and Central Africa (Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana) often yields only 5-15 t/ha due to low inputs, pests (black sigatoka, nematodes), and poor soil fertility. Fertigation (drip + fertilizer) can reduce fertilizer use by 30-40% while increasing yield.
Using balanced NPK (15-15-15) โ bananas need much more K than N or P; high-K formulas (17-7-23) are standard. Applying all fertilizer at once โ bananas need continuous nutrient supply, split into 4-6 applications. Ignoring micronutrients โ bananas often need Mg, Zn, and B supplements on tropical soils. Not accounting for nutrient recycling from crop residues (leaves, pseudostems return significant K).
