The limiting nutrient is the one requiring the most fertilizer to satisfy its need with the given NPK ratio.
Mature cocoa (5 yr), 1,000 trees/ha, target 1 kg dry beans/tree, using 15-15-15 at 50% efficiency: Needs = N 60, P₂O₅ 40, K₂O 70 kg/ha. With 15-15-15: N needs 60÷0.15=400 kg, P needs 40÷0.15=267 kg, K needs 70÷0.15=467 kg. Limiting = K at 467 kg. Adjusted for 50% efficiency: 934 kg/ha = 934 g/tree. (Split into 2-3 applications: April/May and August/September.)

Cocoa is a $100B+ global commodity, with 70% of supply from West Africa (Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon). Most smallholders apply little or no fertilizer, contributing to aging tree decline and low yields (300-500 kg/ha vs potential 1,500-2,000 kg/ha). Proper fertilization can double yields in 2-3 years. Cocoa requires balanced NPK plus magnesium (often dolomitic lime) and calcium. Leaf nutrient analysis is the best guide — target 2.0-2.5% N, 0.15-0.20% P, 1.5-2.0% K in recently matured leaves.
Applying fertilizer too close to the trunk (can burn roots) — spread in a ring 30-50cm from the trunk, or under the canopy drip line. Applying only N (urea) — cocoa needs balanced NPK, especially K for bean filling. Forgetting magnesium — West African soils are often Mg-deficient, causing yellowing. Fertilizing during dry season (wastes product without moisture to dissolve).
