A Beginner's Guide to Soil Testing: Why, When, and How

Soil testing is one of the most valuable investments a farmer can make. Yet many smallholder farmers never test their soil, relying instead on tradition or guesswork for fertilization decisions. This guide covers everything you need to know to get started with soil testing.

Why Test Your Soil?

Soil testing provides critical information about your soil's nutrient status, pH level, organic matter content, and texture. Without this information, you are essentially fertilizing blind — either over-applying (wasting money and polluting water) or under-applying (limiting yields). A basic soil test costs $10-30 per sample and can save hundreds of dollars in unnecessary fertilizer while increasing yields.

When to Test

The best time to test soil is in the fall after harvest, or in early spring before planting. Testing in fall gives you time to plan fertilization and apply lime if needed (lime takes 3-6 months to react). Avoid testing immediately after fertilizer or manure application, as this will give artificially high nutrient readings. Test every 2-3 years for established fields, and annually for high-value crops or fields with known deficiencies.

How to Collect a Proper Sample

Sample collection is the most important step — a poorly collected sample gives misleading results. Follow these steps:

  1. Divide your field into sampling zones based on soil type, slope, previous management, and crop performance (problem areas separately).
  2. For each zone, collect 15-20 subsamples in a zigzag pattern across the area.
  3. Use a soil probe or auger to sample from 0-20cm depth (topsoil) for most crops. For deeper-rooted crops, also sample 20-60cm.
  4. Mix all subsamples in a clean bucket, remove rocks and plant debris, and take 500g (1 pint) as the composite sample.
  5. Place in a labeled bag or box with your name, field ID, date, and crop plans.

Understanding Your Results

A standard soil test report includes: pH, buffer pH (for lime requirement), organic matter, cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation (Ca, Mg, K), and available nutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg, S, and micronutrients). Most reports also include fertilizer recommendations. Key numbers to focus on:
